Vocational training course in cutlery forging

420 hours- 4 months– All public

This 12-week course trains you to become a skilled blacksmith in cutlery. You will then be entitled to be employed as blacksmith in cutlery or wrought-iron work, grade 5 (European level grade 3) and also to set up your own business.

Titre de Forgeron-coutelier à la forge, niveau V (niveau III du Cadre européen des certifications), code NSF 254 par arrêté du 16 avril 2014 publié au Journal Officiel du 3 juillet 2014.

No academic level is required but the applicant will be interviewed so as to assess his motivation and the feasibility his project


Unit 1 : Initiation. A few basic in forging
Safety rules in the workshop. Forging tools. Different kind of fuel : coal, gas : advantages and draw backs. Working with fire. Materials used : various kinds of steel. Heat treatments. Pratical approach : forging objects.

Unit 2 : Tool-making : forging tongs, chisels...
35 hours no including personal work

Unit 3 : Welding. Fire, the essential element in welding. Learning about the process of welding. Praticing several kinds of welding
35 hours no including personal work

Unit 4 : Damascus 1 : The various kinds of steel used. Welding damascus. handling damascus. Forging objects
35 hours no including personal work

Unit 5 : Damascus 2. Different kinds of damascus: laminated work, mosaics, volutes and implementing the different techniques to combine them.

Unit 6 : How to make a folding knife (piemontese knife also referred to as a 2 nailed knife). Learning about various types of folding knives and their mechanisms. Practice : forging a basic folding knife.
35 hours no including personal work

Unit 7 :Wrought-iron work 1: The basics : bulging holes, broaching, riveting. Hot drilling, upsetting, welding. 45 hours no including personal work

Unit 8 :Wrought-iron work 2. Forging a piece working from plans drawn by the trainee, combining various smithing techniques. 40 hours no including personal work

Unit 9 : Wrought-iron work 3. Forging a more sophisticated piece, for instance a piece of furniture or structural piece.. 45 hours no including personal work

Units 10: How to calcule the cost price, make out preliminary estimate, invoicing.10 hours no including personal work

Units 11 : Forging sculptures and elaborate objects.. 70 hours no including personal work
